What is the Best Family Dog?

Updated on May 3, 2011

What is the best family dog?

There are plenty of great family dogs, but what is the best family dog out there? I've asked myself this question many times, so I decided that I would find out once and for all what the best family dogs are. Here's what I discovered...

Best City Dogs and Urban Dogs for Families

When it comes to the best city dogs and urban dogs for families, there is a wide selection of the good city dogs. Some of my favorite city family dogs include Great Danes, Italian Greyhounds , the Maltese, Beagles, West Highland White Terriers , Lakeland Terriers, Greyhounds, Whippets, Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and none other than the Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

Now, you may be surprised about some of my choices of best family dogs for the city, like Great Danes for example. Believe it or not, Great Danes can make some of the best apartment dogs, since Great Danes ironically do not take up much space considering that they're the largest dog breed especially. Plus, Great Danes are wonderful with children of all sizes, as long as they have the proper training first of course, as with any dog breed.

Good Family Dogs for the Suburban and Metropolitan Lifestyles

So what is the best family dog for the Suburbs? Well, some of the many great family dogs for suburban and metropolitan lifestyles include Labrador Retrievers, Irish Red and White Setters, Golden Retrievers, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, West Highland White Terriers, Irish Setters , English Springer Spaniels, Great Danes , Greyhounds , Doberman Pinschers, Standard Poodles, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Beagles, Whippets, Sloughi Greyhounds, and Pharaoh Hounds.

The Best Family Dog Breeds for Country and Farm Life

Pretty much just about any dog breed is suited as good family dogs for country and farm life, but there are a few great family dogs that surpass the rest in country living. Some of the best family dogs for rural lifestyles include Saint Bernards, Leonbergers, Standard Poodles, Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, Belgian Shepherd Dogs, Irish Setters , Great Danes , Greyhounds, Kooikerhondjes, English Springer Spaniels , Sloughi Greyhounds, Pembroke Welsh Corgis , Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, and Pharaoh Hounds.

What is the Best Family Dog Breed?

Well, the best family dog actually just depends with each individual family. When one good family dog breed might suite some people, other great family dog breeds will fit another’s living styles, personal finances, or where they live better than what some dogs might. Which dog breed suites your family best? Well, that's something that you'll have to decide on your own. However though, If you would like to further read on some different types of great family dogs, check out some of my other blogs where I thoroughly discuss each type of dog breeds individually. Also, I highlighted in blue, various family dogs that I have written blogs, in which you can click on and you can automatically go to that dog breed’s specific blog for further information.
