So glad to see Great Danes included here! Always knew it, just never saw specific info (even in all kinds of dog books) or stats. Really good hub. I'm not a small-dog fan, altho' I love 'em all, but sick and tired of people telling me no big dog belongs in an apt. Great Danes belong anywhere!

Definitely interesting that Great Danes are included. I wouldn't have guessed. My wife and I have always wanted to get a great dane.

Go for it, McGilwriter! They are big but don't require as much as lots of big dogs--more laid back, etc. They're quiet, too--no worse than another person. Had a cat that made more noise going down the stairs! Is a good hub!!

Teylina, you're so right. It's true Great Danes can make wonderful apartments dogs. Plus they're usually not very difficult dogs to care for either considering their sizes. Partially this is due to the fact that Great Danes actually have such slow metabolisms that they eat about the same amount of food as a dog on the larger scale of medium.

Also because Great Danes have naturally short coats, (obviously lol) that they don't require regular expensive visits to the doggie grooming parlor like medium length and long haired coated dogs do. :)

Now, the only real problem when it comes to expenses for Great Danes is bloat, which can more times than not be prevented though. Just like horses, large animals are often times prone to bloat from eating too fast or too much at once. So it's important to monitor a Great Dane’s eating pace and too feed these Gentle Giants in a few small portions throughout the day opposed to feeding your Dane all at once.

Personally though, I think that Great Danes are simply one of the best dog breeds for any sort of lifestyle really, whether that is Apartment Living, Suburban Lifestyles, and even Rural Life.

And because Great Danes are just a bit above average for Dog Intelligence they’re not “nearly” as needy as breeds such as the Border Collie or Sheepdogs. Although, I’m not discrediting the Border Collie, since they’re one of my favorite dog breeds as well. Border Collies are just high maintenance though; Great Danes aren’t high maintenance dogs by any means, to say the least.

Miss Lil' Atlanta, you made my day! Have just returned home from a 2-wk absence, and sat down to HP to get back in the groove, and this is the first thing I read! Really appreciate your info on the bloat, because altho' I've had big dogs in the past, bloating has not been a problem because (I guess) of the way they were built or their breeding-- or, rather, lack of! All were mutts--the best! Thank you for the advice, since I'm seriously considering another dog this fall. I'm sans animal-friend and miss it!

Teylina, I'm glad I could help you out! And you’re right, that mixed dog breeds tend to have a better disposition for developing hereditary disorders and diseases. Usually because mixed dogs take on the better characteristics of the breeds that they’re interbred with.

Other than a few mutts that are higher prone to other hereditary health problems, so just remember to watch out for that from time to time. Like for example, I had a Cockapoo that kept on developing gum disease. I paid for surgery to get her gums fixed 3 times, and the disease only came back every time I had it fixed. Other than that though, I’ve "only" had wonderful experiences with mixed dog breeds. Mutts are usually some of the best dogs to own.

And that’s awesome that you’re getting a new dog in Fall. I always love bringing a new dog home; it really is just so much fun.

Good article! I'm really shocked by the inclusion and place the Great Dane has on the list as well. Everything you guys said in the comments is correct though, it makes perfect sense why they would be. I guess I just never really thought it through because I stopped at their huge size :) I am going to be writing a series of hubs on apartment living and dogs, especially larger dogs. So I love that the great dane is on here. I'm a firm believer that with the right knowledge, lifestyle, and training any dog can live in an apartment happily with their owner. Though some are certainly more suited for it than others ;) hence the great list above ^
