Definitely interesting that Great Danes are included. I wouldn't have guessed. My wife and I have always wanted to get a great dane.
Go for it, McGilwriter! They are big but don't require as much as lots of big dogs--more laid back, etc. They're quiet, too--no worse than another person. Had a cat that made more noise going down the stairs! Is a good hub!!
Miss Lil' Atlanta, you made my day! Have just returned home from a 2-wk absence, and sat down to HP to get back in the groove, and this is the first thing I read! Really appreciate your info on the bloat, because altho' I've had big dogs in the past, bloating has not been a problem because (I guess) of the way they were built or their breeding-- or, rather, lack of! All were mutts--the best! Thank you for the advice, since I'm seriously considering another dog this fall. I'm sans animal-friend and miss it!
Good article! I'm really shocked by the inclusion and place the Great Dane has on the list as well. Everything you guys said in the comments is correct though, it makes perfect sense why they would be. I guess I just never really thought it through because I stopped at their huge size :) I am going to be writing a series of hubs on apartment living and dogs, especially larger dogs. So I love that the great dane is on here. I'm a firm believer that with the right knowledge, lifestyle, and training any dog can live in an apartment happily with their owner. Though some are certainly more suited for it than others ;) hence the great list above ^

So glad to see Great Danes included here! Always knew it, just never saw specific info (even in all kinds of dog books) or stats. Really good hub. I'm not a small-dog fan, altho' I love 'em all, but sick and tired of people telling me no big dog belongs in an apt. Great Danes belong anywhere!
